Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique teaches us a way to refine the underlying coordination patterns that are the foundation to everything we do.

It is in the process of applying the AT principles that we become aware of our habits of movement and thought. Habits are an essential part of day to day life, without them we would have decision fatigue before we left the house in the morning. Some of our habits no longer serve us, they may hinder us and or when left unchecked for long enough can become the root cause of pain.

The aim of an Alexander teacher is to facilitate students in developing the skills with the goal of conscious control, that is to move away from reaction to a chosen response. This may be a movement pattern that has caused head and back pain over many years or a stress response to a particular stimulus such as speaking at an important meeting or potential conflict.

The Alexander Technique makes gradual and definite changes to our habitual patterns of use. In lessons a teacher will work with the nuances of an individual student to re-educate their whole system to a state of ease and co-ordination.
